Sissel Vera Pettersen (born January 28, 1977 in Oslo ) is a Norwegian jazz musician ( vocals , saxophones and composition) and visual artist.

Live and act

Pettersen took singing and piano lessons at the age of seven; she also completed eight years of ballet training . From 1993 she learned the saxophone. From 1996 to 2000 she studied at the Trøndelag Conservatory of Music in Trondheim with John Pål Inderberg , Erling Aksdahl , Terje Venaas , Egil Kapstad and Vigleik Storaas . Then she deepened her education at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen with Lars Møller and Fredrik Lundin until 2002 .

Pettersen has been part of the Copenhagen jazz scene ever since. In 2006 she composed the work Tidal Tales , which she performed at the Trondheim Jazz Festival with Nikolaj Hess , Marilyn Mazur and Lars Danielsson . She has also performed at other festivals such as the Kongsberg Jazz Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Soddjazz and Olavsfestdagene with Marc Ducret , Bo Stief , Palle Mikkelborg , Danny Gottlieb and other musicians. She presented two albums as a duo with Nikolaj Hess and also made guest appearances in New York. With Joachim Badenhorst and Mikkel Ploug, she forms the improvisation trio Equilibrium , which released three albums.

Petterson became known for her advanced and experimental singing techniques, often combined with live electronics. She has worked with Jon Balke , Theo Bleckmann , John Hollenbeck , Lionel Loueke , Chick Corea , Bobby McFerrin , Christian Wallumrød , Mats Gustafsson and John Tchicai . She can also be heard on albums by Mads Granum , Joakim Milder , Ayi Solomon, Daniel Herskedal , Anna Kruse , Thomas Agergaard / Lift and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra .

Pettersen's work also includes performance, theater, and visual arts. She has worked with choreographers such as Kjersti Alveberg and Stuart Lynch and on a number of projects with the Cirka Teater . She has exhibited paintings and graphics in Norway (Rana Art Museum, Galleri Fenka) and Denmark (Galleri Arleth) and designed covers for the record label Winter & Winter .
