Diviciacus (Haeduer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diviciacus (Latin form, Celtic : Diviciacos ), also Divitiacus , was a Haedu tribal leader and druid in the 1st century BC. Chr.

Diviciacus was friendly to the Romans and visited in 61 BC. BC Rome , where he asked the Senate for help against the Sequani , who had defeated the Haeduer together with the German Ariovistus . The request was unsuccessful, the Senate only commissioned the respective governor of the province of Gallia Narbonensis to support the Haedu and other allies as far as possible - this initially had no practical effects. In Rome he also met Cicero , who was instructed by Diviciacus on the Celtic art of divination.

58 BC As Vergobret (tribal leader), Diviciacus requested the help of the new Gallic proconsul Caesar first against the Helvetii , who, oppressed by the Germanic tribes under Ariovistus, had decided to leave their homeland and relocate their people. He later asked Caesar for help against Ariovistus himself and thus contributed to the outbreak of the Gallic War . He came into conflict with his anti-Roman brother Dumnorix , who contested his rule and planned an overthrow. Dumnorix was disempowered, but pardoned at the request of the Diviciacus. This supported Caesar also in the following year in the fight against the Belgians , where he obtained the pardon of the Bellovacians . After this incident, Diviciacus is no longer reported, suggesting that he passed away shortly afterwards.
