The Dixie Cups
The Dixie Cups is an American vocal trio that was also very successful internationally in the early 1960s.
history
The sisters Barbara Ann and Rosa Lee Hawkins and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson were among the first representatives who established the so-called "girl groups sound" in America at the beginning of the 1960s. In 1963 they began to pursue a professional singing career. Shortly thereafter, they took part in a talent competition in New Orleans , where Joe Jones became aware of them. He himself had a bestseller with You Talk Too Much in 1960 and has now become the manager of the band. He had them sung to the producer and songwriter duo Leiber / Stoller , who immediately signed the attractive trio and gave them the name The Dixie Cups .
As a first song, the formation recorded the song Chapel of Love , which was written by Phil Spector , Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich . The title reached number 1 in the US singles chart.
The Dixie Cups were in the charts until 1965 . When their sixth single, Gee the Moon Is Shining Bright , didn't make it to the Billboard charts, the Red Bird record company canceled the group, which then got a record deal with ABC Records . In 1965 and 1966 four more singles were released, but none of them were successful.
The song Chapel of Love was included in the list of the 500 songs that shaped rock 'n' roll the most, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . It was also used in Stanley Kubrick's film Full Metal Jacket .
