The Jbel Ayachi ( Arabic جبل العياشي, Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ ⵏ ⵄⴰⵢⴰⵛⵉ ) is a 3747  m high mountain in the north-eastern High Atlas approximately in the geographical center of northern Morocco . Ayachi also refers to the entire mountain range of around 20 kilometers in diameter, in which there are several three-thousand-meter peaks.

geography

The Jbel Ayachi is located southwest of the city of Midelt in the Drâa-Tafilalet region . The mountain belongs to the transition area between the Palearctic and Sub-Saharan ecosystems : while the north is still sparsely forested, the southern flanks are characterized by an arid climate . Several tributaries of the Oued Moulouya have their source in the Jbel Ayachi area .

Ascent

Snow lies on the north side of the mountain despite the proximity of the desert until around June. For experienced hikers, the relatively easy ascent and descent from the 1800 m high village of Tounfite can be mastered in one day; a bivouac is located at 2200  m . Further hikes and mountain climbs are also possible from there.

fauna and Flora

The biodiversity is high. However, there is damage from extensive grazing by the sheep and goats of the Berber herdsmen, some of whom are still nomadic - forests that once existed have largely been cut down and native trees such as atlas cedars , oaks and junipers can hardly grow back due to the browsing. A few bearded vultures still live on the mountain .
