Djoloff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Djoloff was a hip-hop group from Senegal whose name came from the French spelling of the historical Jolof empire . The three band members, Mbégane Ndour (* 1970), who had also produced for other musicians, Aumar Sow (* 1974) and Doudou Seck (* 1976), settled in Paris in 1995 and founded the group. Along with Positive Black Soul and Daara J, they are among the most important representatives of Seneraps .

Djoloff started out as a rap group and practiced conscious rap in languages such as Wolof and Fulfulde , which are spoken in Senegal, and later also in French and English. They accompany computer-generated hip-hop beats with African instruments such as the balafon , the kora and the ngoni . In the songs they critically deal with life in France and with African politicians, but they also address the life of immigrants in France.

From 1996 they appeared at several French festivals , including the Francofolies of La Rochelle , Africolor , the Les Transmusicales in Rennes and the La Villette's Urban Cultures Festival .

The recording of the debut album " Lawane " began in 1998 and was continued in 2000 with the participation of the internationally known Senegalese musician Wasis Diop , who also works as a producer. The album, released in Europe in 2001, was followed by a tour, including in Germany at Popkomm . They performed in traditional African clothing ( boubou ), which is not common for Senerap stars in Dakar.

Since the group split up, Sow has been working as a solo artist.
