Dmitri Ivanovich Tolstoy ( Russian Дмитрий Иванович Толстой ; born May 30, 1860 in Saint Petersburg , † March 5, 1941 in Nice ) was a Russian art historian .

Life

He was a member of the family of Count Tolstoy . His parents were the Russian minister Ivan Matwejewitsch Tolstoy (1806-1867) and Elisabeta Wassiliewna Tulinowa (1826-1870). His twin brother was Ivan Ivanovich Tolstoy . Tolstoy was the successor to Ivan Alexandrowitsch Vsewoloschski from 1909 to 1918 museum director of the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg . He was married to Countess Jelena Michailowna Tschertkowa.

During the February Revolution , the Hermitage was closed to the public, although academic work practically never stopped for a single day. In April 1917, when the situation in Saint Petersburg had stabilized, Tolstoy ordered the museum to accept visitors again and opened the entrance through the portico of the museum with the atlases. As a result of the October Revolution , his activity as museum director of the Hermitage ended.
