It has been privately owned since 1817 and is on the list pursuant to the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict , the Federal Act of June 20, 2014 on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and the Ordinance of October 29, 2014 on Protection the cultural assets are protected in the event of armed conflict . location

Prominently located on the Rosenberg mountain spur in Berneck, it once towered over the lower Middle Rhine Valley and was visible from afar. On the slopes of the south side is the Rosenberg vineyard , which gives its name to the wine grown there (Bernecker Rosenberg). The hamlet of Hinterburg lies at the southern foot of the vineyard, the village of Berneck to the north and the hamlet of Husen to the west on the mountain spur. The ruin can be reached via a path along the northern slope that is still preserved today. This begins in the north of Berneck in lap Riet in Litt creek bridge . Today the north side is wooded and therefore the ruins are no longer directly visible from this direction.

history

Wall painting at the Doktorhus, created between the 17th or 18th century

Built in the 12th or 13th century as Bernang Castle , probably by the nobles of Bernang as their ancestral seat, first documented in writing in 1210 with a Marquart. In 1290 the widow Behem ceded the festivities to the St. Gallen monastery . In 1305 it was renamed as Burg Rosenberg after its new owners, the nobles of Rosenberg . From 1505/1518 to 1798 the chief bailiff of the St.Gallen monastery lived on her as administrator of the farms from Marbach to Höchst . Under the direction of the doctor Dr. Med. Johann Jakob Ritz, 19 Bernecker citizens bought the castle in 1811 for a purchase price of 34,550 guilders. In 1812 it was demolished by the Berneckers and the stones were used as building material. In 1817 Johann Ritz's son took over the splendid lookout pulpit on the Rosenberg. The esteemed doctor, scribe and Ammann had the dainty bell tower built on the garden house, which he equipped with a clockwork. In 1836 he planted the white poplar, which is now protected . The Schlössli Rosenberg , as the former stair tower has been called since then , moved from the Ritz family to the doctor Julius Custer. The heirs of his daughters sold it to Peter Schmid in 2000.

present

The wall on the west side, once twenty meters high and one and a half meters thick, is still partially preserved. An original representation of the castle can be found as a painting in the hall of the Braui restaurant and as a wall painting at the Doktorhus in Berneck.
