Bibiton Castle

The castle Bibiton in Kaltbrunn in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen is now a ruined castle .

location

The castle Bibiton originally stood on the eastern edge of the Tuggenersees between Tuggen and cold Brunn, who in the 16th century silted. Today the remains of the Niederungsburg lie in the Lint plain northeast of the Benken railway station at around 413  m above sea level. M.

investment

The ruins are the remains of a tower castle , of which only the wall remains. It was built with field stones from the area.

history

It was probably built in the early 13th century by the Counts of Rapperswil , who, as castvögte of the Einsiedeln Monastery, built several fortifications in the Lin Plain during this time, including Grynau Castle .

In the 14th century the castle became the seat of feudal holders of the Counts of Toggenburg . In 1358 a nobleman named Kraft Schnode sat here, until 1393 the Austrian nobles von Bruchi lived on Bibiton. Subsequently, the castle became the seat of the Meier von Kaltbrunn, who were mentioned in 1419 and 1428. In 1444 it was destroyed in the Old Zurich War and abandoned in the 15th century.

In 1863 the remains of the castle were demolished by the owner of the site. In 1928 the local historian Johann Fäh acquired the area and carried out excavations in 1936/1937. During the investigation, it was found that the first floor of the tower castle was hidden in the ground and that its foundations rest on a pile grid. The exposed remains of the wall have now largely been covered up again. The finds included various tools, stove tiles, horseshoes and the remains of a harness.
