history

The family was first mentioned in 1170 with Burkardus de Blattûn and in 1229 with Ulricus de Blattenn . As the chronicler Christian Kuchimeister reports, shortly before 1270 the castle was in the area of the Reichshof Kriessern , which together with the reigns of Thurgau and Zürichgau , was given to Heinrich Walter von Ramschwag ( Lords of Ramschwag ) in 1278 for helping King Rudolf in the battle was awarded on the Marchfeld , built by the Abbot of St. Gallen, Berchtold von Falkenstein as protection against the Counts of Montfort-Werdenberg and awarded in 1277 to Ulrich von Ramschwag .

Because of participation in the Appenzell War , the castle and the lordship were temporarily withdrawn as a fief. In 1458 Walter Heinrich and Ulrich von Ramschwag sold the castle and the manor to the citizen of Constance, Jakob Mangold. In 1486 it was bought back by Abbot Ulrich Rösch of St. Gallen. From 1637 to 1640 Abbot Pius Reher had modifications carried out. The complex was then the official seat of the Bailiffs von Kriessern until 1798. The castle was destroyed in the French War in 1799 . Around 1911 the facility was partially used as a quarry.

An initial renovation of the tower was carried out by the Canton of St. Gallen. Further restorations were carried out on the tower in 1977 and on the surrounding walls and the remains of the castle gate in 1985.

The castle ruins are known to the people of the Rhine Valley as Blatten Castle . The area of the former castle and the interior of the tower (there are no more floors) are freely accessible. On the still preserved vaulted cellar there is a wooden building that was built later. This is operated from April to September by the Oberriet Ski Club as a castle restaurant.
