Engel unter Wasser is a German TV film by Michael Schneider from 2015 , which was produced on behalf of ZDF .

action

Eleven-year-old Anna Kampe is missing on the North Sea island. Only 24 hours later, her body is found in the bed of Michael Brandstetter, who is immediately arrested. The inspectors Lubosch and Steinhilb take the investigation anyway because they believe in Brandstetter's innocence. Since they noticed inconsistencies in the individual statements, their suspicion is reinforced that the corpse, who was mentally retarded after a meningitis in childhood, was only foisted on Brandstetter in order to mislead the police.

Inspector Lubosch meets Judith, the child's mother's sister, at the very beginning of his investigation. She came to the island on the same ship as he and his colleague Steinhilb. What nobody knows is that she is visiting her biological daughter Laura, who has so far grown up with Anne after Judith left her with her sister Sibylle a few years ago due to excessive personal demands.

When Judith wants to put Laura to bed one evening, she learns from her that Anna often had to take “medicine” and shows her the tablets in the dessert from Judith's sister. Judith confronts Sibylle, who believes that the antidepressants would help Anna because the child would often have been so sad. Judith is afraid that her daughter might have taken the pills too, but Sybille can reassure her about this. She shows her letters from Anna stating that Anna wanted to become an angel and would have taken the pills on her own. But Judith feels that this is not true and after she finds out that her brother-in-law Sybille had cheated on another woman, which Sybille found out when she caught her husband inflagranti one day, Judith is convinced that her sister Anna has given an overdose of tablets because she wanted to punish her husband like that. Judith implores Sybille to tell the police the truth, because Brandstetter is thus wrongly suspected. This suddenly disappears from his cell and so the islanders start looking for him, especially Anna's father is not dissuaded from holding the alleged murderer of his daughter to account. For him he is undoubtedly the perpetrator and that is why he has him, with the help of the island police officer Ströver, taken from custody and now wants to shoot him. Walter Steinhilb intervenes, who is now fatally hit by the bullet intended for Brandstetter. His colleague Lubosch arrests Kampe and looks for Stöver, whom he also arrests.

Judith can no longer take responsibility for leaving her daughter with Sybille. She explains to Laura that she is her mother and leaves the island with her.

criticism

Volker Bergmeister rated for Tittelbach.tv and wrote: “Two policemen and a young woman in search of the truth: who killed little Anna? 'Engel unter Wasser' (ZDF) trades under the label 'Nordseekrimi', but soon turns out to be a multi-layered family drama in front of the gloomy, rough backdrop of the island of Föhr. Well-dosed tension, atmospherically dense, top staff and with a Hanno Koffler as the taciturn, carefully observing and deliberately acting inspector. "

Marcella Melien wrote for the FAZ : “The film is designed as a chamber play, but instead of illuminating the relationships between the characters, it repeatedly uses effects to increase tension and discomfort while artificially delaying the clarification of the case. Some of the pictures seem overused, especially those inserted scenes in which Anna (Johanna Haberland) floats under water with outstretched arms. Inspector Lubosch dives down to her again and again and tries to catch her. "

Mario Grüninger fromquotemeter.de said: “At first glance, the plot for the crime thriller doesn't necessarily suggest anything new, but the film manages to build up tension right from the start. The setting is presented in a very gloomy way, the island of Föhr, the sea, the family property: everything is depicted very lonely, almost completely abandoned. In connection with the instrumental background music and the chanting of a child, the film manages to create its own atmosphere that makes the audience curious about more. ”“ In retrospect, the end of the film remains relatively unspectacular and a little calculating, which creates tension But this doesn’t stop. ”For the critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm , Engel unter Wasser was “ not fish, not 'scream!' - but okay as bycatch ”. They gave the film the best possible rating, thumbs up.

Also Focus.de criticized: "The film by director Michael Schneider is fairly exciting - that too mystical staged events varies strangely back and forth between hand solid thriller and family drama konfusem. You see a lot of meaningful looks, you hear repetitive dialogues and a few sentences that unnecessarily describe exactly what you are already seeing. There is no room at all for smiling or even laughing, and people have to walk through quite a bit of mud. The investigations of the two inspectors turn out to be surprisingly unprofessional, and over everything is haunted by oppressively intrusive music. All in all, that's pretty unsatisfactory - which, by the way, also applies to the actors' performances. "
