Dmitri Nikanorowitsch Goryachev

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dmitri Nikanorovich Goryachev , Russian Дмитрий Никанорович Горячев , English transcription Dmitrii Nikanorovich Goryachev, (* 1867 ; † 1949 ) was a Russian mathematician who dealt with mechanics.

Life

Goryachev was a student of Nikolai Yegorovich Zhukovsky . In his dissertation at Lomonossow University in 1898, he gave an exact solution to the problem of the movement of four parallel, straight vortex filaments (based on the Göttingen dissertation by the Swiss Walter Gröbli (1852-1903), who had treated three vortices). In doing so, he anticipated results that would be achieved independently almost a hundred years later.

In 1899 Goryachev found another integrable case in gyro theory , the Goryachev-Chaplygin gyro . It is named after him and Sergei Alexejewitsch Tschaplygin .

In 1909 he became an associate professor in Warsaw, from 1915 he was a professor at the Polytechnic in Novocherkassk and he also taught in Rostov.

He founded the Institute for Railway Engineers in Rostov-on-Don in 1929 and was a professor there until 1944.

His brother Nikolai Nikanorowitsch Gorjatschew (1883-1940) was professor of astronomy at Tomsk University.
