Dmytro Iwanowytsch Bahalij (born October 26 . Jul / 7. November  1857 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 9. February 1932 in Kharkov , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian historian, University Rector and mayor.

Life

Dmytro Bahalij was born in Kiev and studied after graduating from high school in 1876 at the historical-philological faculty of the Kiev Vladimir University . As the best student of Volodymyr Antonowytsch , he moved to the University of Kharkiv and began studying the history of Sloboda-Ukraine . In 1883 Bahalij became assistant professor and in 1887 associate professor of Russian history at the University of Kharkov and between 1906 and 1911 he was its rector. He was also a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a member of the State Council. He wrote over 200 works on the history of the Left Bank Ukraine , Sloboda and Southern Ukraine as well as textbooks on Russian history and Russian historiography.

From 1914 to 1917 he was mayor of Kharkiv. In 1918 he became a member of the committee for the establishment of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and from 1919 he was chairman of the historical-philological department and later a member of the presidium of the academy. From the 1930s he was exposed to repression by the Soviets. In 1932 he died of pneumonia in Kharkiv and was buried there.
