Doctor & the Medics is a British psychedelic rock and new wave band. She became known in the 1980s for a cover version of the Norman Greenbaum piece Spirit in the Sky .

Band history

The group was founded in 1982 by The Doctor (real name: Clive Jackson, born July 7, 1961 in Knotty Ash , Liverpool ), Gareth Thomas and Steve McGuire. The Doctor was a well-known DJ in the club "The Clinic" at that time . He got his nickname because he failed the medical school aptitude test . The band's image was influenced by glam rock , the musical direction was a mixture of psychedelic rock, glam rock and punk .

In 1982 the first single The Druids Are Here was released . Although the band was named the best live band by the New Musical Express in 1984 , it wasn't until 1985 that a consistent line-up was found. In 1985, the second single Happy but Twisted came out, which rose to number 1 on the indie charts . With the backing vocalists "The Anadin Brothers" (which quite often changed), bassist Richard Searle and drummer from Ritchie was founded in 1985, the Alice-in-Wonderland - EP on their own. This was followed by another EP and the single The Miracle of the Age , this was produced by Andy Partridge .

1986 saw the band's only hit, a cover version of the Norman Greenbaum hit Spirit in the Sky . The single peaked at number 1 in the UK and made the band famous overnight. In Germany the single reached number 9, in the USA number 69. The single successor Burn , which was released in the same year, fell short of expectations and was only able to place itself in 29th place. The single Waterloo ( ABBA cover version) was also released in 1986 in collaboration with Roy Wood . This could not place in the top 40 of the British charts (45th place). The band performed mostly in the nightclub "Alice in Wonderland", which was founded by The Doctor. In 1988 Vom Ritchie and Searle dropped out. At that time, interest in the band was already waning. A fixed line-up could not be established and sales of albums and singles stagnated. At that time, The Doctor offered themed trips to special concert venues that are now considered to be early forerunners of the rave movement.

The last studio album to date, Instant Heaven , was released in 1996 . The band still plays concerts today, the sets consist of covers and of course their big hit.
