Dodo Chichinadze
Dodo Tschitschinadze ( Georgian დოდო ჭიჭინაძე ; * December 28, 1924 in Kutaisi , † November 3, 2009 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian film and theater actress .
Life
In 1944/1945 she finished drama school in Tbilisi (Georgian Film Artists Studio) and in 1949 joined the theater troupe called "Mardzhanishvili" in the Tbilisi theater. For over 10 years she was the lead actress at the Marjanishvili Drama Theater in Tbilisi . In 1960 Dodo Chichinadze was named "Honored Art Worker of Georgia" and in 1976 she was awarded the honor of "People's Artist of Georgia". On October 2, 2009, the Georgian state honored her with a star in front of the Rustaveli Theater in Tblissi.
In addition to her theater career, Dodo Chichinadze was also known through films. Her first film role - she had in 1945 as Ketevan (Qetevan) in the film "David Guramishvili" by Nikoloz Sanishvili and Joseb Tumanishvili.
Soviet and Georgian films followed, in which Dodo Chichinadze delighted viewers and critics at home and abroad with her warmth and charm, as well as her excellent acting skills. Her charisma and her convincing human portrayal of the characters meant that she was often referred to as "the Sophia Loren of the East" in western film critic circles. The prevailing opinion was that without the “iron curtain” and regulations of the Cold War, Dodo Chichinadze would have been mentioned in the same breath as Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida . Due to the fact that many Soviet films did not find their way to the rest of Europe and the theater trips were also very limited during this period, Dodo Chichinadze remained unknown to most western viewers, while she was popular in the eastern countries, especially in the Soviet Union.
