Dodoma is one of the seven districts of the Dodoma region in Tanzania . It is also called Dodoma Municipal and consists of the capital Dodoma and the surrounding country. The district is bordered by the Bahi district to the west and north and the Chamwino district to the east and south .

Dodoma has an area of ​​2576 square kilometers and around 400,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The district is located on the central plateau of Tanzania at an altitude of 900 to 1000 meters. In the south the land rises hilly to over 1500 meters. There are no permanent rivers in the district. The climate is a local steppe climate, BSh according to the effective climate classification . The precipitation of 550 to 600 millimeters per year falls mostly in the rainy season from December to March, in the months of May to November it hardly rains. The annual average temperature is 25 degrees Celsius, the coolest is July with 20 degrees, the hottest in November with 25 degrees Celsius.

history

In earlier times the area was called Calangu by Dodoma. The current name Dodoma goes back to the word "Idodomia" in the Gogo language . In 1912, during the time of the German occupation, the fortress was built, which is now the seat of the Prime Minister.

The population rose from 322,811 at the 2002 census to 410,956 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of 2.4 percent. In 2012, 55 percent of the over-five-year-olds spoke Swahili, 21 percent English and Swahili, and 23 percent were illiterate.

Facilities and services

  • Education: Of the 106 primary schools in the district, 92 are state-run and 14 are private schools. In 2017, 72,000 children were taught by 1,800 teachers in public schools. Of 50 secondary schools, 36 are state and 14 are private. In the public schools 700 teachers teach 18,000 students, in the privately run secondary students there are 340 teachers for 6,000 students. There are also five universities, including the Dodoma University.
  • Health: Four hospitals, thirteen health centers and 52 pharmacies provide medical care for the population. The number of people infected with HIV decreased from 9.9 percent in 1012 to 6.7 percent in 2015.
  • Water: 70 percent of the population in urban areas and 50 percent in rural areas are supplied with safe water (as of 2017).

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture employs seventy percent of the district's population, along with businesses and small industries.

  • Agriculture: Grapes, peanuts, corn, vegetables and sorghum are grown in the district. Of the 93,000 households in the district, 26,000 kept pets, 300,000 chickens, 170,000 cattle and 115,000 goats (as of 2012).
  • Trade: Mainly agricultural products are processed, for example in the production of edible oils.
  • Airport: Dodoma Airport is right in the city, around one kilometer north of Nyerere Square. The runway has a length of 2000 meters. There are daily flight connections to Dar es Salaam and a weekly flight to Mwanza (as of 2020).
  • Railway: The Tanganyika Railway runs through Dodoma and runs from Dar es Salaam across Tanzania to Lake Tanganyika .
  • Roads: In the city of Dodoma, the T3 national road, which leads from Dar es Salaam to Rwanda and Burundi , and the north-south axis, the T5 national road from Iringa to Arusha, cross . Of the remaining 900 kilometers of roads in the district, only 25 kilometers are paved, the rest are gravel or dirt roads.

politics

In Dodoma, a district council is elected every five years. The district council consists of 60 representatives, 41 of whom are elected and 19 are appointed. Since the election in 2015, representatives from the seven parties CCM , CHADEMA , CUF, UPDP, NCCR-MAGEUZI, UDP and TLP have been represented in the district council. The chairman is Davis G. Mwamfupe (as of 2020).
