Doge (/ ˈdoʊʒ /, also / ˈdoʊdʒ /, / ˈdɒɡi /, / ˈdɒɡeɪ /, / ˈdoʊɡeɪ / or / ˈdɒɡ / or / ˈdoʊɡ / ) is an internet phenomenon ( meme ) that became popular in 2013. Doge is a variation of the English word "dog" ( dog ).

It consists of a picture of a dog of the Japanese breed Shiba and a rudimentary, English text in the form of “such x”, “many x”, “very x”, “so x” or “wow”. The word "wow" is permanently written alone. The most commonly used photo shows Kabosu, a dog adopted by Atsuko Sato.

origin

The original motif of the meme is the female dog Kabosu, who was adopted by the Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato when a dog breeding business was closed. The dog lived there with 19 other pups, most of which were euthanized . Because of the round face of the bitch, it was named after the citrus fruit Kabosu . Sato then ran a weblog from 2009 to educate and criticize dog breeding through cute photos of her pets .

Doge reached number 12 on MTV's list of 50 Things Pop Culture Had Us Giving Thanks For in 2013.

Meme structure

Comic Sans MS

Doge differs from other memes (e.g. Lolcat ) at the design level through the use of the Comic Sans MS font (instead of Impact ) as well as the use of several colors and consistent lower case. In terms of content, it differs from other meme topics in that syntactic peculiarities are focused instead of sound or spelling.

Doge Speak

The language used in the doge memes has anchored itself in internet culture as a carrier medium thanks to its high recognition value, regardless of an image. An example of Doge Speak in pure text form is an interpretation of the Romeo and Juliet material that was created on the blogging platform Tumblr :

"What light. So breaks. Search east. Very sun. Wow, Juliet.
What Romeo. Search why. Very rose. Still rose.
Very balcony. Search climb.
Much love. So propose. Wow, marriage.
Very Tybalt. Much stab. What do?
Find exile. Very Mantua. Much sad.
So, priest? Much sleeping. Wow, tomb.
Search poison. What dagger. Very dead. Wow, end. "

Doge Speak follows a simple structure. It uses various phrase types , which are combined to sense paragraphs. A section of meaning is usually composed of one or more two-word phrases, followed by a one-word phrase. The repertoire of one-word phrases is very limited and, in addition to wow, mainly contains word forms such as amaze , excite or scare (instead of amazing , excitement or scary ).

The first constituent of a two-word phrase is also limited to a very limited selection of fixed words. This basic vocabulary includes so , such , many , much and very . In standard English, these terms specify a selection restriction for the following words. The second two-word phrase constituent is chosen contrary to this restriction. Standard language ungrammatical phrases are deliberately created. For example, search does not modify any verbs in standard English, which works in Doge Speak: such eat is correct here. English adjectives and nouns are treated in the same way, so very wine in Doge Speak is just as correct as many delicious .

In terms of language, Doge Speak resembles a human self-projection directed at the dog and works like simplified baby talk . People often speak to animals (and babies) in a syntactically highly simplified and articulatory exaggerated manner. This is reproduced here in the form of a meme, now from the point of view of the animal. Doge Speak therefore reflects how humans talk to dogs. In modern Internet language, it is also common to express overwhelming emotions using a stylized shortened sentence structure. Doge Speak also fits into this principle.

Adaptation

  • On YouTube you could enter “doge meme” in the search bar for a while, then the font of the page changed from Easter Egg to Comic Sans MS.
  • The crypto currency Dogecoin , abbreviation DOGE, got its name and design from the internet phenomenon Doge. Its little sister currency is Litedoge (abbreviation: LDOGE ).
  • dogescript is a scripting language that can be compiled according to JavaScript .
