Dolbina is a genus from the butterfly family of the hawkers (Sphingidae). The genus has its distribution in the Palearctic . It is closely related to the genera Sphingulus and Kentrochrysalis .

features

The moths have short, slender antennae , which are hooked at the end and finely hairy, longer on the basal half than on the apical half. The pilifer , a structure derived from the labrum , is reduced to a nodule that has a few bristles and scales . Only Dolbina inexacta has no scales on it. The proboscis , like the palps, has receded. The tibiae have no thorns, only two pairs of greatly reduced spurs can be seen on the rear tibia.

The eggs are spherical and pale yellowish green in color.

The caterpillars , as far as they are known, are very similar to those of the genus Smerinthus , but have a long, straight and granular anal horn and show a lightening under the sloping side stripes.

The pupae are also similar to those of the genus Smerinthus . The proboscis is completely fused with the body, the cremaster is elongated and ends in a pair of small thorns. There are more thorns on the side.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed on trees and shrubs from the olive family (Oleaceae).

Systematics

In Europe , the Dolbina genus is only represented by Dolbina elegans ; 12 species of the genus are known worldwide:
