features

Most species of the genus have a blue and black colored eye spot on the anal corner of the hind wings. The forewings, which are serrated on the outer edge, have brown or gray marbled patterns. The thorax has a dark brown band on the back. The proboscis has receded. The abdomen bears spiky scales on the back instead of wide scales . The tibiae are not thorned, only in Smerinthus kindermannii , Smerinthus minor and Smerinthus ocellata there is an apical thorn on the front legs. The tibiae of the hind legs have a pair of spurs distally , the pair facing away from the body is absent.

The oval eggs are pale green to yellow in color and sometimes have a red tone on one side.

The caterpillars are green in color and have a rough, finely pustulated body surface. On the side they have yellow or white diagonal stripes. Her head is triangular, the anal horn is straight, erect and granular. They are very similar to the caterpillars of the genus Marumba .

The pupae are shiny dark. They also look very similar to those of the genus Marumba , but they lack the elevations on the front. The antennae sheath is wide in male pupae, the cremaster is curved upwards at the tip and has a small, paired tip and further tips on the sides.

Way of life

The caterpillars feed mainly on shrubs and trees from the families of the willow family (Salicaceae) and rose family (Rosaceae).
