Dollar Mambo - partly also in the Spanish spelling Dólar Mambo - is a feature film by the Mexican director Paul Leduc . Except for a seemingly independent framework, the performance of a ventriloquist, the film manages completely without language, but tells its story of violence during the US invasion of Panama in 1989 only through dance, gestures and music. The representation is accordingly not always realistic, but partly symbolic; Emotions and relationships are danced, the US soldiers wear gas masks in the nightclub, and music and dance generally play the leading roles.
The film was shown at the London Film Festival on November 18, 1993 and was not officially released in France until October 18, 1995.
action
In the prologue and epilogue , a ventriloquist chats with his doll that they are actually talking about "nothing".
In the actual story, dock workers, unemployed people, little crooks and young people enjoy the numbers and performances of scantily clad dancers, artists, etc. in a nightclub in Panama. Suddenly, US soldiers break into the bar and finally rape a mambo dancer.
criticism
“A musical based on the US invasion of Panama in 1989, which is both extremely sensual and highly political. His exuberant cinematic language, developed using simple means and almost without spoken words, trusts the power of its images and the dynamism of the imagination. "
