Mikkeli Cathedral
The Cathedral of Mikkeli in Finnish Mikkeli is the Episcopal Church of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of Mikkeli . The bishopric was originally in Savonlinna , then in today's Russian Vyborg . It was only after Vyborg was lost to Russia in 1945 that the bishopric was moved to Mikkeli.
Building
The brick church was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1896–1897 by Josef Stenbäck . The altarpiece by Pekka Halonen dates from 1899. While large parts of the city were reduced to rubble during World War II, the church itself suffered little damage. 1954–1955 the church was renovated, with the wooden pulpit being replaced by a simpler one. During the renovation in 1983–1984, the church was given lighter and friendlier colors, and the arrangement of the benches was changed.
The church offers up to 1,200 seats and 900 standing places.
