Domènec (h) (Domingo) Terradellas or Terradelles ( Domingo Miguel Bernabé Terradellas , also: Domenico Terradeglias , baptized February 13, 1711 in Barcelona ; † May 20, 1751 in Rome ) was a pre-classical opera composer from Spain .

Life

Domènech Terradellas may have been a choirboy under Francesc Valls , but this has not yet been proven beyond doubt. On May 23, 1732 he was accepted at the Conservatorio di Sant 'Onofrio in Naples and studied with Francesco Durante . His first opera was performed in Rome for the Carnival of 1739, his first great success being the performance of the Opera seria Merope. In 1744 his Artaserse was premiered in Venice .

Terradellas was church music director in Rome from 1743 to 1745, then he was appointed director of the King's Theater in London. From 1747 he lived in Paris before returning to Italy in 1750. Didone abbandonata (in Turin) and Imeneo in Atena (in Venice) were performed here in 1750 . Terradellas died a few months after the performance of the last opera Sesostri re d'Egitto in Rome under unexplained circumstances. In addition to his operas, Terradellas set numerous masses, motets and other church works, as well as some instrumentals.

Terradellas enjoyed a high reputation among his contemporaries, this is made clear by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his " Lettre sur la musique francoise " from 1753, in which he listed Terradellas in a row with Nicola Porpora , Niccolò Jommelli , Baldassare Galuppi and Davide Perez .
