Former Dominican monastery

The former Dominican monastery in the French city of Carpentras was in the meantime a theater and now houses the city's tourist information office . The Gothic choir of the monastery church has been registered in the French list of monuments as Monument historique since 1932 .

history

The convent of the Dominicans in Carpentras was founded in 1312 and was at that time outside the city walls. The construction of the first church took a long time; it began in the early 15th century and was not completed until 1597 under the direction of the architect Blaise Lécuyer . A new cloister was built between 1642 and 1643 thanks to the generosity of the Archbishop of Bordeaux , Henri de Sourdis , who was exiled to Carpentras by Richelieu . The main building, south of the church choir, was built between 1722 and 1730 on the advice of the architect Jean-Baptiste Franquerenovated. The Dominicans left the convent in 1791.

In 1803 the nave was demolished to make room for living space. A large bourgeois house was built on the site of the nave. Only the choir and the Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire chapel remain of the church, which was built in 1650 at the expense of the Rosary Brotherhood . In the 19th century the monastery housed a barracks , at the same time the ground floor was converted into a theater between 1820 and 1822 and renovated in 1862 by a local decorator named Baldouin. In 1902 the building was restored by the city architect Bonnaud, he rebuilt the gallery on the western facade, which was in danger of collapsing.
