The Jesuit College in the French city of Carpentras is a former educational institution run by Jesuits , which is now used as a clubhouse and cultural space. The St. Anna and St. Joachim consecrated chapel inside the building has been registered in the French list of monuments as Monument historique since 1926 .

history

Concerned about the rigor and quality of the school system, the city received the approval of Pope Paul V in 1607 to found a Jesuit college , despite the proximity of the college in Avignon, founded in 1553 . The district was henceforth called île Saint-Ignace , named after the co-founder of the Jesuit order Ignatius of Loyola .

The foundation stone of the chapel was laid in 1628. The construction work dragged on for a long time due to lack of funds; construction of the dome only began in 1687.

In the middle of the 17th century, around 300 students, mostly of middle-class origin, attended the college. Despite the expulsion of the Jesuits from France in 1768, the buildings were reserved for schools until 1988.

description

The college consists of seven buildings that are arranged around two inner courtyards in the north and south. The chapel is to the east of the complex. The spacious, richly furnished interior is illuminated by windows in the dome. The gallery on the ground floor has a pendent vault supported by belt arches . The unfinished baroque facade has two levels, the different widths of which are balanced out by volutes .
