description

After the Romanesque nave collapsed, a new cathedral was built in 1404. The unfinished west facade consists of two large glass windows from the 15th century, their cladding made between 1615 and 1618 and the neo-Gothic bell tower . The nave, supported by buttresses with chapels built in between them , is lengthened by a narrower and lower choir and a seven-sided apse , a notable example of southern French Gothic .

The building is also noticeable for its furnishings, especially the choir, which is made of gilded wood. Among the 15th century stained glass in warm colors is a rare motif: God the Father , seated, holding a crucifix in front of his knees; between Christ and him the dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit . On the left under the choir gallery is the triptych The Holy Trinity crowns the Virgin Mary between St. Sifredus and St. Michael to see, possibly from the studio of Enguerrand Quarton comes.

In a room next to the choir, the church treasures with goldsmith work , wood paintings and liturgical ornaments are exhibited. The balcon du Saint-Clou was built in the nave in 1724 . On Good Friday and on the day of St. Sifredus, the venerable relic is exhibited there. According to legend, forged with one of the passion nails for Emperor Constantine , the sacred bridle was venerated in Constantinople until 1204 and was probably brought back by a crusader .

In the chapels you can see paintings by Mignard , Natoire , Étienne as well as by Pierre Parrocel and Duplessis .
