The Holy Bridle ( saint mors ) is a relic , in the Cathedral St-Siffrein , the episcopal see of the former diocese of Carpentras in the Vaucluse department in the French region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur , is kept.

history

According to legend , after the discovery of the cross of Christ , St. Helena , mother of Emperor Constantine the Great , had this bridle forged as a gift for her son from one of the sacred nails of the cross .

The relic is dated to the 6th century. Until Constantinople was sacked during the fourth crusade (1202–1204) it was kept in the treasury of Hagia Sophia , after which the relic was considered lost. In 1226 their representation could be seen in the seal of Bishop Isnard. In 1260 the representation of the holy bridle was included in the city arms of Carpentras (two silver nails and bridle on a red background). The relic is venerated in a chapel in Carpentras Cathedral, the Chapelle du Saint Clou (Chapel of the Holy Nail).
