The Arch of Carpentras is a Roman triumphal arch in Carpentras , a town in the Vaucluse department in the French region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur , which was built in the 1st century. The Arc de Carpentras is at the rear of the Palace of Justice in a corner of the former St-Siffrein Cathedral . It has been protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1840 .

The Arc de Carpentras is the only remaining building of the Roman Carpentoracte . In the Middle Ages , the arch of honor was incorporated into the Romanesque cathedral as a vestibule. In the 19th century he was released again.

The narrow sides of the single-arched gate show reliefs with pairs of prisoners who are tied to a post with chains. On the west side, the figure on the left is wearing a knee-length robe with a wrap and the head is covered by a hood . Next to him the figure is wrapped in fur, possibly a Teuton is depicted. On the eastern side, a figure is again shown in a knee-length robe and a wrap, the other person is dressed in a tunic .
