Don Chisciotte alle nozze di Gamace ( Don Chichotte on the wedding of Gamace ) is a divertimento teatrale in two parts by Antonio Salieri based on a text by Giovanni Gastone Boccherini (based on the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes ). The world premiere took place on January 6, 1771 in the Vienna Burgtheater .

In this opera Salieri and Boccherini tried to create a hybrid of opera buffa and ballet . The rather short, simple plot of the piece was intended to provide the opportunity to switch on numerous dance scenes and ballet interludes that were choreographed by Jean Georges Noverre . The idea of amalgamating the two genres, however, did not succeed, and opera and ballet remained separate units on the Viennese stage for a long time.

Many years later Salieri used the overture as the basis for the prelude to his comic opera Il mondo alla rovescia (premiered 1795) and for this purpose - in addition to many formal changes - provided it with a larger set of instruments (including additional clarinets, trumpets and timpani) .
