Don Megowan

Don Megowan (born May 24, 1922 in Inglewood , California , † June 26, 1981 in Panorama City , California) was an American actor .

Life

During his high school years, Megowan, who was very tall, was a good athlete. Megowan's acting career began in 1951; initially he was used in small roles. Guest appearances in television series followed. After participating in the Disney productions Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontiers and The Great Locomotive Chase , his roles grew. As before, television guest appearances were numerous (including many western series such as Smoking Colts , A Thousand Miles of Dust and Cheyenne ). Megowan has played a handful of lead roles in B-films, some made in Italy. His most famous role was probably that of Captain Huckabee in the 1962 series The Beachcomber . Mel Brooks cast him in 1974 as a gum-chewing desperado in Blazing Saddles .

Megowan was also one of the cast of "Gillman", the monster character who was first seen in The Terror of the Amazon . For television he played Frankenstein's monster .

Megowan, was a heavy smoker, aged 12 to 48, who died of throat cancer at age 59. His weight had fallen from almost 150 kilos to just under 75.
