Nova-Spes is a German synth pop / future pop band around the musician Matthias Huebner.

history

The band was founded in 1999 by Matthias Hübner ( Schkeuditz ), Steffen Pöhler ( Heilbronn ) and André Richter ( Kölleda ) as an Esperance as part of a music research project at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Köthen. Before that, Hübner and a friend founded the classic synthpop band Skyline East, which disbanded in 1999. In 2000 Esperance was renamed Nova-Spes. André Richter left in 2003. Peter Walter ( Stuttgart ) was found to replace him .

Nova-Spes was briefly under contract with Modern Entertainment in 2003, but terminated it shortly before the label itself was dissolved.

In 2007 she had her first club success with her song TANZ! which appeared on a compilation of the music magazine Orkus . In Russia , the band became known in the scene primarily for their Song Run in the same year.

Since 2011 the band has been under contract with Danse Macabre , the label of Das-Ich- founder Bruno Kramm . The first release by Danse Macabre was the album pripyat - home of lilith , on which Bruno Kramm himself participated and was responsible for the mastering . On the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster , the band released a concept album that was supposed to deal with this disaster. While working on the album, the Fukushima disaster struck . The topicality of the album resulting from this fact generated a relatively high level of media coverage. For the layout of the album they worked together with André Friesen, a photographer and creator of a website that deals with the disaster-affected town of Pripyat .

In 2011 Nova-Spes played at the Nocturnal Culture Night festival together with greats such as VNV Nation , Kirlian Camera and DAF . In a voting by the organizer, the participating viewers decided to want to see the band again in the following year.

Bruno Kramm was responsible for the mastering of the 2012 album Leben ist Krieg . The band separated stylistically from synth pop and moved towards future pop / hellectro . They played the first concert for the new album on August 1, 2012 in Dresden together with the Americans from The Crüxshadows .

In 2013 they played songs from their future album Black Sheep On White Fields which was released in 2014 for the first time at a festival . She made a first release with her EP Perfect World Alive , which includes Perfect World and Change as well as the song Alive , which is not part of the album, as a free download in December 2013. The band has been compared to Devision , And One and Depeche Mode , as well as the German band Camouflage . In April 2014 they played to a sold-out house in a Leipzig underground club together with the American band Assemblage 23 .

The next album A Dog And His Boy was released in 2016 and entered the "German Alternative Charts", where it reached number 2. The following album, WorldWideWar Zone , also made it into the "German Alternative Charts". With this album, the band not only left the Bruno Kramm label Danse Macabre, Kramm was no longer responsible for the mastering, but Huebner himself. In May 2018 the album was released on the Russian label ScentAir Records in Russia, on June 1, 2018 worldwide.

Until 2014 the band consisted of Matthias Huebner, often referred to as the head of the band, Peter Walter and Steffen Pöhler. The latter left the band in June 2014, according to the press release for professional as well as private reasons. The band announced a change in the line-up in April 2014 after Pöhler was absent from the concerts in March and April 2014. For the first time Maik Männel came on as the new keyboardist in February 2016, but he had to leave the band after another assignment. In October 2018 the band played in Russia for the first time, at this concert Guido Mann from Leipzig appeared on the synthesizer. Since then the band has officially consisted of Matthias Huebner, Peter Walter and Guido Mann.

style

The band describes itself as a typical “synth pop band with a Nova Spes sound”. The music magazine Orkus certified the band in 2007 as having a high recognition value and described them as “just the thing” for And One and Depeche Mode fans, but also for “fans of experimental escapades”. In August 2012, the magazines Sonic Seducer and Zillo still attest to the band's roots in the synth-pop area, but with the album Leben ist Krieg a clear turn to the Hellectro scene.

In 2014 a comparison was made with greats in the synth scene, for example Depeche Mode , De / Vision , And One and Camouflage .

Others

Until 2012, a trademark of the band was the use of a quote from philosophers in the booklet of their published albums. The only exception during this time was the album Pripyat - Home of Lilith, in which a religious book is quoted at this point. There is also a quote in the album Black Sheep On White Fields , released in 2014 . This time, however, it is not a philosopher who is quoted , but rather the educator Katharina Saalfrank , known from the German TV program Die Super Nanny . Steffen Pöhler works as an editor for a private radio in southern Germany and is a qualified sound engineer at SAE.
