Don Ness (born January 9, 1974 in Duluth , Minnesota ) is an American politician. He was the 38th mayor of Duluth.

Life

Don Ness attended Central High School in Duluth and studied from 1993 Administration at the University of Minnesota Duluth , where he in 1995 President of the Student Parliament ( Student Body President was). For the Senate of Students of the State of Minnesota, he represented the university in 1996. He made his bachelor's degree there in 1997 . He was awarded the Sieur du Lhut Prize, named after the French soldier and explorer (1639-1710), who gave Duluth its name, for his commitment to the university.

From 1997 to 2007 Don Ness served as campaign manager for Jim Oberstar in the US House of Representatives elections . He then worked for the Zeppa Family Foundation, a liberal foundation from Duluth.

Don Ness is married and has two sons and a daughter.

Political career

Don Ness is a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party . He was elected to Duluth City Council in 1999, the second youngest in Dulth history. During his two terms there, he was city council president for two years. In 2001 he was in charge of the signing of the Cities for Climate Protection agreement for Duluth, which, among other things, provides for compliance with the Kyoto Protocol in the city. He was a member of the Minnesota Property Tax Study Group and is the founder of Bridge Syndicate, a youth organization that is culturally active in Duluth, organizing the Homegrown Music Festival, among other things.

In November 2007 he won the election for mayor of Duluth with 52 percent of the vote. He took office in January 2008 as the successor to Herb Bergson (also Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party) and held it until 2016. On January 4, 2016, Ness was replaced by Emily Larson .
