Donald Caldwell Arthur is a former doctor and Vice Admiral in the US Navy , who last served as Surgeon General of the United States Navy between 2004 and 2007, head of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) and commander of the Medical Corps (United States Navy) .

Life

Arthur came in 1974 in the US Navy and completed his studies in medicine at the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey with a doctor of medicine (MD) from. After an interim employment as a surgeon , he completed his marine medical training in aerospace medicine and submarine medicine. In the following years he took part as an officer in advanced training courses in war medicine, diving medicine, operation of decompression chambers , radiology , as a paratrooper and jump trainer for airborne units of the US Navy and the US Marine Corps, and as a crew of submarines .

At the beginning of his military career, Arthur, who also did research on saturation diving and low-temperature physics , worked as an aviation medic and diving medical officer in the Philippines and then as chief surgeon on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) before he went to another Emergency Medicine Training was director of the Emergency Medical Department at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego . In 1998 Arthur returned to Washington, DC, to the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery ( BUMED ) , where he was first Assistant Director of Health Care, then Deputy Surgeon General of the US Navy as well Head of the US Navy Medical Corps before becoming Commandant of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda in 2002 . During this time he also took part in an advanced training course in emergency and preventive medicine in the aerospace industry and received the Executive Award of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Association of Military Surgeons of the US in 2002

In 2004 Vice Admiral Arthur succeeded Michael L. Cowan as Surgeon General of the US Navy and as such was also head of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) and commander of Navy Medicine until his replacement by Adam M. Robinson, Jr. in 2007 .

He is a Fellow and Past President of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) and was also President of the Association of Military Surgeons of the US in 2005

Willard has received several awards for his forty years of service in the military, including the Legion of Merit , Meritorious Service Medal , Navy Achievement Medal , Navy Commendation Medal and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal .
