Donald Mazankowski
Donald Frank Mazankowski PC CC AOE (born July 27, 1935 in Viking , Alberta , Canada ) is a Canadian entrepreneur , business manager , politician of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (PC) and former long-time Vice Prime Minister .
Life
MP and promotion to minister
Mazankowski, whose ancestors came from Poland came, studied after the school attendance law , earned a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) and later as an entrepreneur operates.
He began his political career as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party when he was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in June 1968 and represented the constituency of Vegreville in Alberta for more than 25 years until September 1993 .
Shortly after his first election, he was appointed to the competence team of his party in the opposition and was there successively for youth (1969 to 1970), regional development (1971 to 1972), transport (1972 to 1976), communication (1973 to 1975) , Government Operations (1976 to 1977) and Transport (1977 to 1981). During this time he was also between October 1973 and 1976 chairman of the general assemblies ( caucuses ) of his party.
In June 1979 he was appointed minister for the first time by Prime Minister Joe Clark , namely as Minister of Transport in the 21st Canadian Cabinet , of which he was a member until the end of Clark's term on March 2, 1980. After losing power, he again became a member of the PC's competence team, where he was responsible for the treasury and economic development (1981 to 1983) and transport (1983 to 1984).
Vice Premier under Mulroney and Economic Manager
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney reappointed him in September 1984 to the 24th Canadian Cabinet as Minister of Transport and from May to June 1986 as Acting Minister for Regional Industrial Expansion.
In June 1986 he was also Deputy Prime Minister and held this position for almost seven years to the end of Prime Minister Mulroney on June 24, 1993. He also served from June 1986 to December 1988 leader of the conservative government faction in the lower house.
He was also President of the Canadian Privy Council from June 1986 to April 1991 and Regional Minister for Alberta from July 1986 to 1992. He was also Minister in charge of privatization and regulatory affairs from August 1987 to January 1989 and President of the Treasury from August 1987 to March 1988. After a further position as Minister of Agriculture from September 1988 and April 1991, he was finally Finance Minister in the Mulroney cabinet from April 1991 to June 1993.
In September 1993 he retired from political life and took on numerous positions in the private sector and is a member of the Board of Directors of Weyerhaeuser , Shaw Communications and the Power Corporation of Canada , among others .
He was named Officer of the Order of Canada in April 2000 and Companion of the Order of Canada in 2013 for his political services .
