Donald R. Prothero
Donald Ross Prothero (born February 21, 1954 in Glendale , California ) is an American paleontologist . His main research interests are vertebrate paleontology, paleomammalogy and magnetostratigraphy .
Life
In 1976 Prothero received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Riverside . In 1978 he graduated from Columbia University with a Master of Arts degree. In 1979 he graduated with a Master of Philosophy and in 1982 he became a Ph.D. PhD from Columbia University.
In 1978 Prothero was a teaching assistant at Columbia University. From 1982 to 1985 he was an assistant professor of geology at Knox College in Knox County , Illinois . From 1985 to 1991 he was an assistant professor at Occidental College . From 1991 to 2001 he was an associate professor and since 2001 he has been professor of geology at Occidental College. Since 1986 he has been a research assistant and since 2003 lecturer in geobiology at the California Institute of Technology .
Prothero's work focuses on the climatic and faunal changes during the late Eocene and Oligocene , in particular using land mammal records, the magnetostratigraphic correlation of Tertiary rocks, and the evolution of rhinos , camels , Equidae , Orodontidae , musk deer , Palaeomerycidae and Protoceratidae .
Awards
In 1991 Prothero was awarded the Charles Schuchert Award from the Paleontological Society .
