Donatian of Reims
The holy Donatian of Reims , lat. Donatianus , NDL. Sint Donaas (* insecure: Rome ; † insecure: 389 in Reims ), was bishop of Reims in the 4th century .
Life
Apart from the mention of his name in the lists of bishops in Reims, all reports about Donatian are uncertain. The legend tells that as a child he was thrown into the Tiber because of his belief in Christ , that Pope Dionysius put a wooden wheel with five burning candles in the river and this indicated the place where the boy could be saved. The candle wheel is Donatian's most important iconographic attribute . He was later sent to Gaul as a messenger of faith and finally made Bishop of Reims. There he is said to have acquired the reputation of holiness early on through his powerful work.
Worship in Flanders
The verifiable veneration of St. Donatian only began with the translation of his relics to Bruges . Baldwin of Flanders probably received it in 863 from Charles the Bald on the occasion of his wedding to his daughter and his appointment as Count of Flanders . He exhibited the relics in the old Marienkirche in Bruges, which since then has been the patron of St. Donatian; since the foundation of the diocese of Bruges in 1559 Sint-Donaaskathedraal . After their destruction, they were taken to the new St. Salvator's Cathedral , where they are venerated in a precious shrine .
