The Danube river lamprey ( Eudontomyzon vladykovi ) is a Neunaugenart that about the north-western and south-eastern catchment area of the Danube populated. This species was confused for a long time with the very similar Danube lamprey ( Eudontomyzon danfordi ) and was not described until 1959 .

features

The adult animals are thickest in the front area of ​​the body and reach lengths of 18 to 21 centimeters. Depending on where they are, they are light to dark gray on the back and whitish on the belly. During the spawning season , the ventral side is shiny silver, the anus region reddish in color. The two dorsal fins always butt against each other without any space between them. The wide maxillary plate has only one blunt tooth on each side; the lower jaw plate has five to seven teeth rounded at the edge. The mouth disc has only weak teeth with bluntly rounded lip teeth. The front tongue plate has no central indentation and its front edge has five to nine pointed teeth, the middle of which is only slightly enlarged.

In the larval stage, the Danube river lamprey eventually becomes longer than the adult animals, as they no longer eat.

distribution

This species lives in the north-west and south-east catchment area of ​​the Danube , among others in Austria , Serbia , Montenegro , Romania and Bulgaria . It is also known from the Bavarian Danube region, from the Paar (near Aichach ) and from the Inn (near Wasserburg and Simbach ).

Way of life

There is hardly any information about the way of life of the Danube river lamprey. The adult animals no longer eat, so they do not parasitize on fish such as the Danube lamprey . Spawning season is from May to June.

The Danube lamprey, like all Eudontomyzon species, is listed by the European Union in Appendix II of the Habitats Directive and is therefore a type of community interest, for whose preservation special protected areas must be designated by the member states.
