Doncaster is a metropolitan borough in metropolitan county South Yorkshire in England . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Doncaster . Other significant places in the borough are Armthorpe , Auckley , Bessacarr , Conisborough , Edlington , Mexborough and Stainforth .
The reorganization of the borders and the competencies of the local authorities resulted in the formation of the Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The County Borough Doncaster, the urban districts Adwick le Street, Bentley with Arksey, Conisborough, Mexborough and Tickhill as well as the rural districts Doncaster and Thorne were merged. These local authorities were previously part of the West Riding of Yorkshire county . Individual villages from the rural districts of East Retford and Worksop were added by the county of Nottinghamshire .
In 1986 Doncaster became a de facto Unitary Authority when the central government dissolved the superordinate administration of South Yorkshire. Doncaster remained part of South Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes as well as for individual higher-level functions such as police , fire services and public transport.
