National Wild and Scenic River | ||
The Donner and Blitzen River is a 97 km long tributary of Malheur Lake in Harney County in the southeast of the US state Oregon .
The river name was created in 1864 by soldiers of German descent who crossed the river during a thunderstorm.
River course
The Donner and Blitzen River has its source southwest of Steens Mountain . From there it flows in a northerly direction through the high desert of Oregon and finally flows into the 1250 m high Malheur Lake. The catchment area covers 2045 km². Ankle Creek, Mud Creek, Indian Creek, Little Blitzen River and Fish Creek all arise on the western slope of Steens Mountain and flow into the Donner and Blitzen Rivers on the right. Above the confluence of the Little Blitzen River, the river is also known as the South Fork Blitzen River . On Page Springs Dam , a small storage building on the river, branch off two irrigation canals. The highest monthly runoff occurs during the snowmelt in May.
ecology
Above the Page Springs Dam , Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri , a subspecies of rainbow trout, is found in the river system . Other fish species are Prosopium williamsoni , Rhinichthys cataractae and Cottus bairdii .
The upper reaches of the Donner and Blitzen Rivers and several tributaries were classified as National Wild and Scenic Rivers in 1988 .
