The duplex is a building in Darmstadt . For architectural and city history reasons, it was declared a cultural monument.

History and description

The semi-detached house was built in 1930 according to plans by the architect Rudolf Schäfer . The consuming brick clinker house belongs stylistically to südhessischen Brick Expressionism of the 1920s and 1930s. The house is structured horizontally by the horizontally running brick associations. The two stairwells reaching into the roof area form a contrast to this . The parapet areas and the lintels are emphasized by the brick decor . The original wooden front doors have been preserved.

Concrete balls in front of the building emphasize the entrances and the symmetry of the residential complex. The architect combined the traditional house shape with the material and decor typical of the time. The twin house survived the Second World War largely unscathed.

Varia

The architect Rudolf Schäfer planned a similar house at Gundolfstrasse 29/31 in the same district. The semi-detached house on Gundolfstrasse was built in 1931. Later the house was heavily rebuilt in the roof area. On this building, dark red clinker bricks were combined into elaborate patterns, especially at the entrances, around the windows and on the staircase projections that extend into the roof .
