Doppelherz is a brand of the pharmaceutical company Queisser Pharma , which is part of the Flensburg-based HGDF family holding company . Doppelherz is one of the best-known German brands for dietary supplements .

The brand's products are mainly produced in Flensburg and are available in over 60 countries worldwide. According to the company, important foreign sales markets include Poland, Russia and China.

A wide range of dietary supplements is offered, mainly over-the-counter herbal medicinal products and medical products that are available in pharmacies, drugstores and food retailers.

history

The tonic of the same name was first put together in 1919 by the Essen druggist Josef Peter Hennes and marketed from 1921.

Initially, it was sold under the word mark “Doppelherz” in capital letters, supplemented by the stylized representation of a nurse holding up a red and a black heart. The development of today's word / figurative mark began after the Second World War. Until the 1950s, the tonic was offered in glass bottles with wrapped, printed paper wrap; later in glass bottles with adhesive labels.

The company Doppelherz Chemische Fabrik JP Hennes GmbH , founded by Hennes to market Doppelherz products, remained family-run until 1976. In 1975 Doppelherz achieved a turnover of 35 million DM. In 1976 the retired sole owner Claire Hennes, daughter-in-law of Josef Peter Hennes, sold the company to the Flensburg spirits company Hermann G. Dethleffsen (today the HGDF family holding ). Queisser Pharma , a manufacturer of toothpaste ("Kaliklora") and adhesive creams ("Protefix") based in Hamburg, has also been part of the Dethleffsen Group since 1978 , and Doppelherz was merged with Queisser Pharma .

Through advertising (since 1982 in the form of television commercials), the brand and its slogans achieved “You can't do without it” (1950), “Strengthens your circulation, nerves and your heart” (1973) and in particular “The power of two hearts” (1980 ) Awareness in Germany.

In 1987, Queisser Pharma relocated its company headquarters and production from Doppelherz to Flensburg to the former Hansen Rum production facility . At that time, the Doppelherz tonic was the company's best-selling product and, with a market share of 20%, the second most important brand on the German market for tonics, the volume of which the Handelsblatt reported in 1987 at an estimated 130 million DM.

From the 1990s Doppelherz was exported to Poland, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Baltic countries; Queisser founded the first subsidiary in Russia in 2007. The further expansion of sales into Asian, South American and African countries followed around 2010.

At the end of the 1980s, Queisser Pharma started the first expansion of the Doppelherz range, initially with garlic and vitamin E supplements and a sugar-free and alcohol-free variant of the tonic ("Vital Tonikum N"). From 1999, products related to vitality, heart and vascular health were grouped under the sub-brand "Doppelherz aktiv". In 2002 the “Active” product line comprised 18 products. From 2006, a range of pharmacy-exclusive products was introduced with the sub-brand “Doppelherz system”. Both product lines have been continuously expanded and expanded in other health areas.

Products

The brand's product range includes the sub-brands "Doppelherz aktiv" and "Doppelherz system" with currently (2020) a total of 174 preparations in 14 application areas such as "Cardiovascular", "Strengthening", "Nerves & Calming", "Stomach and Digestion" "," Muscles, Bones, Movement "or" Eye Health ". The product line "Doppelherz system family" offers food supplements in child-friendly dosage forms (mini tablets, products with a fruit flavor).

Dietary supplements with vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids , amino acids and other substances such as glucosamine , coenzyme Q10 , hyaluronic acid or collagen are offered as mono-preparation or combination preparations in different dosage forms.

The main focus of the pharmaceuticals is on herbal medicines (e.g. ginkgo , garlic , artichoke , milk thistle , vegetable vitamin E). With “Grippal Complex” film-coated tablets with ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride , the “Doppelherz” range also includes a pharmacy-only synthetic drug. The medical products (e.g. eye drops, nasal sprays) also contain herbal ingredients and, in some cases, other natural additives such as sea water, alginate or zeolite .

The classic Doppelherz product “Energy Tonic” and its alcohol-free version “Vital Tonic” have meanwhile lost their importance in Germany; According to Queisser Pharma , around one million liters of tonic are bottled in Flensburg each year, most of which are exported.

distribution

The products available in drugstores and food retailers (not in discounters) in Germany are grouped under the sub-brand “Doppelherz aktiv”. The products of the “Doppelherz system” sub-brand are only sold in pharmacies.

The brand's products are sold internationally in Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Poland through the local Queisser Pharma subsidiaries , and in around 60 other countries through national sales partners.

Queisser Pharma handles the logistics for the national and global delivery of Doppelherz products via its own logistics center in Handewitt near Flensburg.

Market share

According to statistics published by Lebensmittel Zeitung in 2017, Doppelherz is the market leader among OTC brand manufacturers in German food retailing and drugstores with a market share of 15% ahead of Merz , Klosterfrau , Omega Pharma and Kneipp (the survey gave the cumulative share of all drugstore own brands at 21 % on). According to data from the market research agency IQVIA , the Doppelherz product "Aktiv Magnesium" was in third place in 2017 among the most popular dietary supplements in German retail. In the pharmacy segment, Doppelherz is the market leader for non-prescription fish oil preparations (data from 2016).

public perception

"Double heart" in popular culture

The term “double heart” (with reference to the brand's energy tonic or the slogan “The power of two hearts”) is used in different contexts in popular culture.

The term is used - usually ironically - to represent the state of mind, interests and concerns of older people (“double click instead of double heart”, “double heart made of gold”).

Furthermore, the term "double heart technology" is used as a synonym for hybrid car drives that combine gasoline and electric motors, as well as in the electronics sector for computers with multi-core processors, smartphones with two SIM card slots and the like.

“Doppelherz” is sometimes used as a poetic metaphor for dual citizenship . The German-Turkish song “Doppelherz / Iki Gönlüm” on Herbert Grönemeyer's album “Tumult”, which was released in 2018, describes the joy of cultural diversity and has been interpreted several times as a “hymn to dual citizenship”.

Double heart in China

According to media reports, the Doppelherz brand has been experiencing a sales boom in China since around 2015, especially among young consumers. Doppelherz products are sold there in their original packaging with a Chinese sticker; Manuel Neuer and the Chinese actress Qin Lan acted as brand ambassadors .

Critical mention in connection with an NDR documentation

In an NDR documentary on krill fishing in the Antarctic, which was broadcast for the first time in 2018 , an NDR team accompanied a Greenpeace Antarctic expedition . In the report, the station describes and supports the environmental organization's criticism of krill fishing and the use of krill oil for omega-3 fatty acid preparations . The text accompanying the report published by NDR also mentions double heart krill oil products from Queisser Pharma.

According to the company, the krill oil used for the brand's krill oil supplements is sourced from market leader Aker Biomarine . In response to the Greenpeace criticism, Aker Biomarine and other krill fishing companies decided to cooperate with the environmental protection organization and voluntarily renounce krill fishing activities in parts of the ecologically sensitive coastal areas around the Antarctic Peninsula, including in buffer zones around penguin breeding colonies. These protective measures should come into force in 2020.
