Guy Carleton,
1st Baron Dorchester

The indigenous people of the area were Mi'kmaq Indians . The first settlements were created by Akadis . The place is named after Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester . The place developed into a popular stopover for travelers with stagecoach (English: stagecoach ). One of the first brick buildings in New Brunswick was the Bell Inn, used as a hotel in 1821 . After the end of the stagecoach era, shipbuilding became the main livelihood of the residents. In 1880, the Dorchester Penitentiary , a maximum security prison with inmates, was placed on the List of historic places in Westmorland County, New Brunswick , along with the Bell Inn and the Weldon House Hotel .

Pictures and objects from the early days of the place can be viewed in the Keillor House Museum .

Today Dorchester is also active in tourism. Ornithologists in particular visit the region, as some rare species of snipe bird (English: sandpiper ) can be observed here. White-tailed deer and elk can sometimes be found in the surrounding forests .
