Bloch studied from 1962 to 1970 at Aarhus Universitet , where she completed her studies with a Master of Science . After graduating, Bloch first worked in a biological station on the Danish island of Kalø , where she researched hares and mute swans .

In 1974 she went to the Faroe Islands and began working and teaching at the University of the Faroe Islands . Pilot whales formed a thematic focus of their scientific studies . Bloch received his doctorate on this subject in 1994 from Lund University . Her research areas also included various other whale species, such as duck whales and fin whales , mountain hares , invasive species in the Faroe Islands , pollution of the fjords and other topics that affect the environment of the Faroe Islands. In 2001 Bloch was appointed to a professorship at the University of the Faroe Islands.

In addition to her work as a professor, she was also employed in other areas. From 1980 she was first head of the zoological department of the Natural History Museum of the Faroe Islands and was director of the museum from 1995 to 2009. She was editor of the Frodskapparit , a journal of the Faroese scientific society. Bloch advised Vágar Airport on birds and was the Faroese representative to the North Atlantic Marine Mammal Commission (NAMMCO).

In 2010, the collective work "Dorete - her Book - Being a Tribute to Dorete Bloch and to Faroese Nature" was published in her honor, in which scientific articles about the Faroe Islands are summarized.

She was married to the land registry manager Ólávus Danielsen (1927–1997). The musician Jónas Bloch Danielsen emerged from the marriage. Dorete Bloch Danielsen died at the age of 71 and was buried in Kirkjubøur .
