The Protestant village church of Helpt is an early Gothic stone church in the district of Helpt von Woldegk in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It belongs to the parish of Kublank in the Neustrelitz provost in the Stargard church region of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany (Northern Church) .

History and architecture

The church is a carefully executed field stone building in ancient individual forms from the second half of the 13th century with a roof dendrochronologically dated 1662. The nave-width tower has a stepped portal, is closed on the inside with a barrel vault, but was removed from the remains of the west wall on the upper floor in 1726 and closed with an octagonal lattice tower with a Welscher hood . To the east, the nave has a screen gable with a group of three windows underneath in a pressed, ogival screen. There is also a group of three windows on each of the long walls. The walls are otherwise windowless with the exception of a single small window above the plastered southern crypt extension from 1726. A barrel-vaulted sacristy is built in the north, which was subsequently extended to the west by a vestibule for the north portal. During a restoration in 1960, fixtures were made in the tower. The interior is flat.

As a result of inadequate structural maintenance, the village church showed considerable moisture damage, especially in the area of the roofs. The undersized ship roof structure was in danger of collapsing and had to be secured in an emergency. The top of the wall was already bent in some places. The tower framework was weathered, the compartments had come loose and threatened to fall out. After all, the masonry was soaked through due to washed-out joints that the rainwater could penetrate. As part of the village church emergency protection program, the roof was renovated in 2005 with the participation of the German Foundation for Monument Protection .

Furnishing

A baroque altarpiece with a two-storey architectural structure and elaborately carved acanthus cheeks from 1720 shows a painted crucifixion scene in the main field and the Last Supper in the predella .

The wooden pulpit with portal, confessional , staircase and sound cover as well as the western gallery date from the 17th century. The confessional is painted with a picture that shows the meeting of Jesus with the sinner ( Lk 7.36-50  EU ). The pulpit portal shows the apostle Paul with a sword. The four evangelists are depicted on the pulpit. Six parapets of the west gallery each show two apostles, probably from the same hand as from the pulpit. The twelfth apostle is for Judas Iscariot nachberufene Matthias . In 1908 the paintings were restored. A sacrament niche from the second half of the 13th century is equipped with doors and fittings.

A silver-gilt goblet with a paten dates from the first half of the 16th century. A pair of pewter candlesticks was created in 1614. A wrought-iron support for a death's crown for FC Dietz († 1827) is of cultural and historical interest . The bell from 1714 was cast by Michael Begun in Friedland.
