The village church Hohenseeden is the evangelical church of today to the municipality Elbe-Parey belonging village Hohenseeden .

History and architecture

The church was probably built around 1200 in the Romanesque style of field stones and is one of the few churches with an eastern choir tower . The choir is rectangular and is adjoined by a small apse . Here and in the nave there are some typical small Romanesque window openings. On the north and south walls of the nave, two walled up arched portals can still be seen.

During the Thirty Years War the church was sacked by soldiers. Money and goblets were stolen, but one goblet could be retrieved. After the looting, the church building burned down, allegedly because " gypsies " were housed in it. The church registers were also burned, the new ones were not kept until 1655.

The church was rebuilt in the 17th century . The Romanesque windows and portals have been expanded and new openings have been added. An altarpiece dated 1694 , a late Gothic baptismal font and the sound cover of the pulpit date from the time of the renovation . The wooden cover of the baptismal font shows similarities with the sound cover. In 1797 the church received three new bells. Inside the church, galleries were later built on the north and west sides . The west gallery is provided with a balustrade swinging forward in the middle . The first organ was installed in 1843 , built by the cantor Schwarzlose from Kaden .

Another renovation of the church took place around 1910 under the direction of Professor Seeck from Berlin. Here was on the south side of the nave , a medieval wall painting exposed. It is designed in the form of a tapestry and shows scenes from childhood and the passion of Jesus Christ . At the same time the church received its present organ from the company P. Furtwängler & Hammer . A wooden porch was built on the western outside. In addition, a tower clock from the company Weule from Bockenem in the Harz region was purchased. During the First World War , the church had to give up two of its bells for armaments purposes. After the end of the war, a memorial plaque was placed in the church for the 14 fallen citizens of Hohenseedens. In 1923, replacements were purchased for the lost bells, but two bells had to be handed in again in 1942. Only the largest bell remained in the Hohenseeden.

Since many refugees of the Catholic faith stayed in the Hohenseeden after the end of the war , Catholic services were again celebrated in the church from 1947 onwards. In 1959 a memorial stone was erected for the 77 Hohenseeden victims of the Second World War . From 1986 to 1992 the church was completely restored. The church tower was re-covered in 1988 with the support of the partner community from Eschwege . In 1992 the nave was completely re-roofed.
