The Protestant village church Schellenberg is a baroque hall church in the Schellenberg district of Leubsdorf in the district of Central Saxony in Saxony . It belongs to the parish of Leubsdorf-Schellenberg of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony .

History and architecture

The village church Schellenberg is a building that can be seen from afar, which was built after the previous church was demolished in 1777/1778 according to plans by Johann Christoph Uhlmann. Restorations were carried out in 1859, 1968 (inside) and 1979–1984 (outside).

The plastered, south-facing quarry stone building is provided with a straight end of the choir with bevelled corners and a sacristy on the west side of the choir. The tower with a square floor plan stands on the north side and ends in a slanted bell storey with beveled corners, a curved dome and an onion-like tip.

The building has a centralizing character in the flat-roofed interior thanks to the two-storey surrounding galleries. To the side of the pulpit altar there are glazed prayer rooms.

Furnishing

The furnishings are remarkably coherent and geared towards the Protestant requirements of a church interior with a central altar with a baptism in front of it. The pulpit altar is designed in strict architectural forms and decorated with festoons . He carries vases with ears of wheat and grapes on the cranked entablature and is hung behind a large painted red curtain. The baptism in rococo forms made of sandstone is designed as a flower-studded chalice. The cover of the baptism is also designed as a lectern with volutes and a shield with a donor inscription by George Auerbach from 1778. Four baroque grave monuments from the late 17th to the early 18th century with some very rich Framing have survived, A carved relief of the Madonna with Andreas and Lawrence dating from about 1510 comes from the altar of the old church, the master of will Freiberger Domapostel attributed and is now kept in the Freiberg City and Mining Museum.
