Vipperow village church
The village church is a listed church building in Vipperow , a district of the municipality of Südmüritz in the Mecklenburg Lake District ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). The parish of Vipperow belongs to the provost Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .
History and architecture
The Protestant church is an early Gothic flat-roofed hall church , it is one of the oldest churches in the region. A small Thor's hammer is visible on the northeast corner , indicating pagan cults. The building was made of field stone using brick at the beginning of the 14th century . Glare gables are visible on the east side , otherwise the wall is structured by narrow, slightly ogival windows. The windows in the other walls are also ogival. An opening in the east wall, a so-called hagioscope , is a special feature of the region in terms of architectural history. The pointed arch portals on the south side were bricked up, the portal on the north side is in a stepped jambs . It is crowned with an eyelash with an inscribed rosette. The north vestibule and the adjoining sacristy were added at the beginning of the 15th century. The roof tower on the west side was built in half-timbered construction at the beginning of the 18th century .
In the interior a fragment of a wall painting from the 15th century, which was uncovered in 1984, is preserved on the north wall . Scenes from the Last Judgment are shown. Other wall paintings from several centuries, which also go back to the Middle Ages, were restored between 2012 and 2014.
Furnishing
- The carved altar was made around 1500.
- The crescent moon Madonna is surrounded by angels and eight saints , it was purchased in the 20th century.
