Wootz village church

The Protestant village church in Wootz is a hall church from the 17th century in Wootz , an inhabited part of the municipality of Lenzerwische in the Prignitz district in Brandenburg . The church belongs to the parish district Prignitz of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Oberlausitz . The patronage rests with Saint Catherine .

location

The federal highway 195 leads in a west-east direction through the place. The Pappelweg branches off from here into the historic town center. There the church stands on a slightly raised property that is not fenced in .

history

Although the church was not built until the first half of the 17th century, there must have been a previous building. This was consecrated to Saint Catherine. From dendrochronological studies it is known that the core structure dates from 1557 and was partially renewed in 1696.

With the division of Germany , the building was in a restricted area and, like the place, could only be entered with a pass. After the fall of the Wall , the facades on the east and west sides were renovated. The building received a winter church and is therefore used for church services, especially in the winter months. The damaged joint pattern on the north and south sides is to be repaired in 2020.

Building description

The structure was essentially built from half-timbering , the compartment of which is made of bricks. It has a rectangular plan. On the east side are two straight rectangular windows; the gable is windowless. On the north and south sides of the nave there are two rectangular windows each, also transverse. Access is from the west via a simple and rectangular gate that is slightly off-center to the north. Above rises the boarded roof tower, which ends with a conical roof as well as a tower ball and weather vane . The interior is flat covered.

Furnishing

The carved altar comes from the late Gothic period , but was changed at a later date and restored in 1924/1925. Seven saints were added and, according to the Brandenburg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and State Archaeological Museum (BLDAM) , “painted in an alienating way”. In the center is an image of Mary under a glory of rays , which is surrounded by saints arranged in two rows. There are eight other figures of saints in the wings. The backs are decorated with badly damaged paintings.

The other church furnishings include a gallery on the south side, which served as the patron saint of the Wenckstern family. It is decorated with a coat of arms and dates from 1617.
