action

Dorian Gray is a young, educated man with a beautiful appearance who also has great charm. Dorian Gray commissioned his portrait from a friend who is a painter. Through the painter he met Lord Henry, who soon had a bad influence on him. During a meeting with the painter and Dorian Gray, Lord Henry admires the resulting painting by Dorian Gray and regrets that so much beauty will pass. Dorian Gray is now saddened that he will never again appear as young as in the picture. He says that - if he could - he would rather stay as young as in the picture, while the picture should age for him. Lord Henry turns a diabolical plan into reality.

He brings Dorian Gray together with an actress. Dorian Gray falls in love with her, but leaves her when her bad game leads the audience to insults and he sees his vanity injured. The next day Dorian Gray discovers an angry expression on his portrait and has the picture taken away. In the following years, Dorian Gray lived more and more unrestrained and soon all of London was talking about his excesses. His friend, the painter, speaks to his conscience, but Dorian Gray rejects him. When he presses into him and asks him about his conscience, Dorian Gray kills him in a rage.

After 18 years, Dorian Gray still looks beautiful, but has deteriorated inside. He spends his time in opium dens and taverns, where he indulges in alcohol. One day a sailor finds him here. He is the brother of the actress with whom Dorian Gray had a relationship. She took her own life after the separation and her brother now blames Dorian Gray for her death. Dorian Gray rushes home and to his portrait. In the ugly and distorted expression of his portrait, he recognizes with horror his entire vicious life and then wants to cut up the painting. He kills himself when he hits the picture. Only now do the image and the person depicted change their appearance: while the dead grows old and ugly, the painting shows Dorian Gray in youth and beauty.
