Dorino II Gattilusio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dorino II. Gattilusio (also Dorino Gattilusio ) (* after 1400 ; † after 1488 ) was the last lord of Ainos from 1455 to 1456 . He came from the respected Genoese patrician family Gattilusio and was the younger son of Mr. Palamede Gattilusio of Ainos.

Since his older brother Giorgio had died in 1449, Dorino II took over the rule of Aenos after the death of his father in 1455. There were inheritance disputes with the widow Giorgios and her children. Giorgoi's widow claimed the inheritance rights of Palamede's first-born son for her children, especially since he was able to dispose of the property during his father's lifetime. Since there was no amicable agreement between Dorino II and his brother's widow, she turned to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II. After the end of the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Sultan was the liege lord of the Christian lords in the Aegean . The ambassador of Giorgio's widow accused Dorino II before the Sultan of attempting to break away from Ottoman suzerainty. Sultan Mehmed II saw this as a welcome reason to take possession of the then strategically important city of Ainos. In January 1456 he set out for Ainos himself with an army. Dorino II was staying at this time on the island of Samothrace that belonged to his property . The city elders handed over the uncontrolled city of Ainos to the Sultan without a fight against the promise of sparing the city and its residents. The Sultan left it at that, looting the palace of Dorino II and the houses of his followers. He also gave the order to occupy the islands of Samothrace and Imbros, which also belonged to Dorino II . Dorino II tried in negotiations with the Sultan at least to achieve the return of Samothrace and Imroz, but ultimately failed with this project. The Sultan had briefly considered returning the islands to Dorino, but then, on the advice of his dignitaries, decided to assign Dorino II an estate in Macedonia , where he then lived under house arrest under Ottoman guard. In an armed coup d'état, Dorino II succeeded around 1460 with his followers, overpowering the guards and fleeing. According to some sources, he is said to have fled first to Genoa, according to other sources to Lesbos, which at that time was still under the rule of his relative Niccolo II Gattilusio . Probably after 1462 he went to Naxos , where around 1465 he married Elisabetta Crispo , the daughter of his late uncle Duke Giacomo II Crispo of Naxos. Dorino II Gattilusio stayed in Naxos until his death. He had lost his rule of Aenos forever.
