from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dorothee von Laer (born Meike Dorothee Hasselmann , married name also: Holm-von Laer; born August 20, 1958 in Hamburg ) is a German doctor and virologist; she has been a professor at the Chair of Virology at the Medical University of Innsbruck since 2010 . In her institute she researches the use of oncolytic (tumor-destroying) viruses in cancer therapy and gene therapy for HIV infection .

Career

Dorothee Hasselmann was born in Hamburg in 1958 and attended schools in Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom . After graduating from high school in Hamburg, she completed a medical degree at the University of Hamburg from 1978 , which she completed in 1985. Immediately after completing her studies, she researched the viruses of vesicular stomatitis , on which she obtained her doctorate at the Hamburg Institute for Biochemistry in 1987. She then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Microbiology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf . She gained clinical and other virological experience from 1988 to 1991 at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, before moving to the University of Freiburg in 1992 , where she became a specialist in microbiology and infection epidemiology in 1994 .

In Freiburg, she completed her habilitation in 1996 with a thesis on viral infection of leukocytes and their precursor cells in bone marrow , before going back to Hamburg as a research assistant at the Heinrich Pette Institute , where she worked until 2000.

In 2000, she and five other researchers founded the biotech company Vision7, which was active in the field of gene therapy for HIV infections. She also worked for nine years as the coordinator for infection biology at the Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt. During this time - 2003 - she accepted a call to the Goethe University Frankfurt as professor for applied virology and gene therapy. Although the position was intended for life, in 2010 she moved to the Medical University of Innsbruck as professor and head of the section for virology. This is part of the Department of Hygiene, Microbiology and Social Medicine , where, in addition to diagnostic work for the state of Tyrol , research is being carried out on new therapeutic options. A spin-off company from the University of Innsbruck, which she co-founded in 2013 - ViraTherapeutics - was based on her research on oncolytic viruses, was awarded a number of innovation prizes and in 2018 was sold to the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim for a three-digit million amount .

At the end of 2019, Dorothee von Laer was appointed Deputy Managing Director of the Department of Hygiene, Microbiology and Public Health for three years. She is a member of numerous professional societies and commissions as well as the owner of a number of patent families in the field of HIV and tumor therapy.

Dorothee von Laer is widowed in her second marriage (Holm) and from her first marriage (von Laer) the mother of three daughters, who were born between 1983 and 1991.
