Douangchay Phichit

Douangchay Phichit (born April 5, 1944 in Attapeu , † May 17, 2014 in Ban Nadi , Xieng Khouang Province ) was a Lao politician . Until his death he was a member of the Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party .

Life

On December 19, 2002, he was appointed Minister of Defense of Laos. After the 2006 elections, he was confirmed a second time as Minister of Defense and was also Deputy President. He served as Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister until his death in May 2014. Phichit belonged to the Lao Loum ethnic group .

death

Phichit died, along with his wife and 19 other politicians, in a plane crash on their way to a celebration to mark the 55th anniversary of the liberation of Xieng Khouang Province . The machine of the type AN-74-300 of the Lao People's Army crashed on May 17, 2014 at 6:30 local time in the village of Ban Nadi in Paek District of Xieng Khouang province , and burned out. Among the casualties were also the Governor of Vientiane Soukanh Mahalath , the deputy of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party's Central Committee Cheuang Sombounkhanh and the Minister of Public Security Thongbanh Sengaphone . Only three of the 22 politicians on board survived the crash. The crew members of the accident machine were also killed in the crash.
